Hilltop Restaurant and Herb Garden, a famous East Texas landmark founded by renowned herbalist and cook, Madalene Hill, has been part of The Retreat at Artesian Lakes for over 22 years. The quaint dining room overlooks a lake and is surrounded by windows to enjoy the breathtaking view. Outside, a deck provides additional seating surrounded by trees and potted herbs.  The herb garden and a quiet gazebo are located within walking distance.

Hilltop’s cuisine is based on the herbs grown in the adjacent herb garden. The herbs provide also the basis for the variety of jellies, chutneys, relishes, teas and other specialty items produced in Hilltop’s kitchen and sold both at the Restaurant and at the Gift Shop located at the Hospitality House.

Special Holiday offerings include lavish brunch buffets on Easter Sunday, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Thanksgiving; Valentine’s and New Year’s Eve five-course Dinners.

Because seating is limited, reservations are always required.

The Hilltop Herb Garden is a direct legacy to its founder, the late Madalene Hill.  The dozens of culinary herbs, leaf vegetables, and edible flowers grown here are used daily by our Chef in the preparation of meals and our line of Specialty Items, as well as for decoration throughout the resort.

The Herb Garden is also a popular setting for outdoor wedding ceremonies.  It has seating capacity for up to 150 guests and a ceremony arch with a magnificent background.
